5 Places to find Animals in the Adirondacks

Are you and your kids animal lovers? Here's your guide on where to find them!

By Andrea Kelley June 11, 2022

With our family owning 2 dogs, always saving baby birds that fall out of nests, moving snapping turtles in the roads safely across, and even saving and raising a baby squirrel a few years ago, my son Liam has learned a lot about animals, and inevitably loves them! (Like his Mom!)  If you live, or vacation in the Adirondacks, we bet that you have a special spot in your heart for all sorts of critters too!

We hope you enjoy this guide for places to find, learn about, and interact with animals here in the Adirondacks.

#1 - Jungle Experience Zoo

The Jungle Experience Zoo in Granville NY on NY-149 is a small, family and locally owned zoo, that makes a big impact! What sets them apart from the rest is the interaction  with the animals! As soon as you enter the zoo, you immediately see at any give time walking around openly tortoise's, goats, sheep, geese, and occasionally one of the Emu's will walk around with you! The staff are also great about bringing the animals out at times to interact with guests! You might be lucky enough to pet a fox, or see a baby owl, or even a lynx!

There are the crowd favorites, like Rooney the Baboon, who has some pretty hilarious antics, a bird room experience where you can hold out a stick of bird seed and have lots of little birds land on your arms, and a very sweet cuddle-sesh with baby kangaroos wrapped up in blankets! These are just a few of the things you'll experience at The Jungle Experience Zoo. You can buy a stick of food, with options depending on the type of animals you'd like to feed, and we urge you to walk around the whole place, to make sure your family gets to see all of the awesome animals that live there!

Wilmington's Adirondack Wildlife Refuge is dedicated to Animal Rescue, Rehab and Release, as well as Public Education. It's one of the best places to pick, if you really want to learn about the animals that live here in the ADK's.

They currently use Zoom to share live interactive wildlife presentations. You could check them out before going! Here is an example of one. They offer a nature trail, just under a mile long, and it passes through a forest, meadow, and waterfront. There's much more than that thought!
They have a list of every activity and event they're hosting or taking part in this summer, right here.
